Legals.fyi explains US federal law in plain language. This page says what happens to the information that passes through the site. If anything here is unclear, that is our failing.

You do not need an account

Ask a question, read the answer, browse the site — none of it requires registering. We never ask for your name, your email, or anything else about you.

What we keep when you ask a question

We keep the question you typed and the answer we gave.

We keep them because they are the only way to tell whether this works: which questions we answer badly, which areas of law we cannot answer at all, and what people actually need explained. We use them to improve the system.

We do not keep them attached to you. For up to 24 hours we hold two technical values alongside your question — an identifier for your browser session, and a one-way scrambled form of your network address. They exist for one purpose: counting how many questions came from one place, so automated abuse cannot run up our costs. After 24 hours both are deleted. The question and answer remain, but nothing connects them to your browser, your address, or to anything else you asked.

We also record the language, the time, whether we answered or declined to answer, which AI model produced the answer, and how many legal sources it used. None of that describes you.

Please keep personal details out of the question

There is a reminder next to the box, and this is why: we cannot reliably detect and remove personal details, so a name, address or account number you type is kept along with the rest of the question. Ask about your situation in general terms — the answer will be just as useful.

What we never do

• We do not sell your data, and we will not.
• We do not use it for advertising, and the site carries no advertising.
• We do not build a profile of you.
• We do not publish your question. Every page on this site is written and reviewed by us; a question someone asked never becomes a public page on its own.

Companies that see your question

Answering means sending your question to services we do not run:

• Google — its Gemini models detect the language and write the answer.
• Voyage AI — converts the question into a form we can search the law with.
• Cloudflare — serves the site and blocks automated abuse.
• Fly.io — runs the application and the database.

Each has its own terms and keeps data on its own schedule. Deleting something here does not delete their copy.

Cookies

One cookie, which keeps your session while you use the site. It carries no advertising or tracking identifier. We use no analytics cookies and no third-party trackers. Because we set nothing non-essential, there is no cookie banner to click away.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to see what an organisation holds about you, correct it, or have it deleted.

An honest limit applies here: after 24 hours we cannot find your questions. Cutting the link is what protects you, and it also means there is nothing left connecting anything to you for us to look up. That is the intended outcome, not an evasion.

Within that first 24 hours, write to [email protected] and we will delete what you asked.

Children

Legals.fyi is not intended for anyone under 16, and we do not knowingly keep information from them.

Changes

If what we keep or why it is kept changes, this page changes and the date at the top moves with it.
